visa-versa —— why use this GD Forum?

dwingdwang_massive_huge_joint_weed_chronic_marijuana_pot_hot_girl_smoking_smoke_cigarette_sexy_babe_burning_blazing.jpg

This place is The Internet Archive, and hence, The Village Square. They are hosting the Internet's Digital Archives for Our Planet - right here. We have a commercial-free zone. It is net-neutrality oriented around here. On a Technical Level, this place is "where it all happens". In addition to hosting many Forums, The Archive is hosting 218,836 movies in the Moving Images collection; 71,419 concerts in the Live Music Archive collection (LMA); 432,659 recordings in the Audio collection; and 1,770,362 texts in the Text collection. The Advanced Search Form, found at the top of every webpage here, integrates everything for you. Many people respect this place, many people contribute to this place, and many people shit on this place. Keeping this place decent is up to us!

HTML coding instructions from The Heads at The Archive

How can I make links clickable in my posts?

You may have noticed that some posts have highlighted links in them. Internet Archive forums permit the use of HTML codes. Suppose you want to make a link to the Internet Archive home page, one that looks like this: Internet Archive home page. To do this, you would enter the following HTML code: <a href="http://www.archive.org">Internet Archive home page</a>.

How can I format text in my posts?

Since the Internet Archive forum system accepts HTML codes, you can make text bold, italic, underlined, or even colored by using normal HTML codes.

How can I insert MP3s, photos of weed, pics of Jer, filthy-rotten graphics, laundry lists, and tables of set-lists in my posts? In other words, can I create and post webpages here?

Yes, you can. Look up the HTML codes. You can use many HTML codes effectively in your posts on these forums. Most importantly, the best use of HTML coding is for page structuring and layout — HyperText Markup Language. There is no "preview function" in the New Post dialog box. It takes practice, time, and technique to get it right. Newly edited postings are bumped to the top. Good luck!

How do I subscribe/unsubscribe to a forum email list?

Next to all forums, you will see a small envelope. When logged in, you can click on this envelope which will allow you to subscribe or unsubscribe to any forum.

How can I get The Grateful Dead around here?

Since the Internet Archive forum system accepts Grateful Dead codes, you can go to Monte's Dead page for a list of stuff.

Where can I learn how to study the art of noise collecting?

Noise Collector wrote this great posting on the topic.

About the other 2 spots people have mentioned -

The Deadhook forum is indeed friendly, full of warm feelings & companionship. Many people have fled from the bitter waters of the Archive forum to the soothing breezes of deadhook. But it is not full of much Dead discussion or knowledge, except usually on an "I just heard this show" level.
It does have deadmax's reviews of some shows though, which is a plus, but you have to go digging.

I'll quote what I said about the Lost Sailor's Pub a while ago:

I would encourage people to check it out if they haven't seen it. There's a small population, but more Dead-related posts than, say, deadhook. It's even informative, in spots. And it's civil, which you can never say about the Archive forum.

But, in fairness, I also have some complaints about the Lost Sailor's Pub...
1) You have to register to see any messages.
2) Once you register, you may receive spam emails from forumup.it
3) I hate the ads. [Apparently firefox users can block this....but then they don't get to see the inviting "Meet Local Sailors" ads.....]
4) People's avatars & smilies usually take up more space than their actual messages! It gets tiresome looking at (and loading) that stuff. [Ditto for deadhook. Most people, of course, don't seem to mind.]
5) There's a distinct shortage of Pigpen-era fans - though Brent lovers will find plenty of company. Lots of '80s/90s experts there.

Thanks, that is extremely helpful - the kind of info. I was hoping for. I am not at all a fan of overmoderated groups; in fact I'm usually the one arguing against heavy-handed moderation. I guess I'm seeing here what it can look like when there is no moderation at all, at least in a mostly male group. Mostly female groups I think have the opposite problem - there is overconcern that nobody should ever have their feelings hurt, or feel bad because somebody disagrees with them. These groups just get bitchy and PMS-y and people learn to stab each other in the back using PC language.

I hear you on that one ;-). We certainly are a minority here and you can sure tell this is mainly a 'men's club' ... I’m glad to have you around.

This forum sure takes some getting used to but I am slowly learning not to get immediately offended when someone adds a crude reply for no apparent reason.

Hey D--when you check in you might notice that a huge exchange between us has been removed...that's because skies and Dan Healy thought that I was being overly friendly. They actually have the power to do that sort of thing--Healy because he worked with the boys, and skies cause French trolls can do anything...

Seriously, though, if you missed any of it--it was just a lot of discussion on this place vs other places and my poor attempts at humor (like above--that's most defn a joke, so if you're reading this skies, don't write in, okay?), BUT it was the rarely seen mods that removed it because it was SPAM (ie, all the stuff above and below our posts).

I just thought it was funny because I had a series of email notices about replies from you and when I went to them to reply, they were all gone; so you might be wondering too! In the end, I think I answered most of what you asked me about; sorry if I didn't...

If you dont care for "over-moderation" you wont enjoy The Lost Touch Heads Pub, because there, if you dont agree with Admiral Kochman, who goes by the name Suasponte here, you get a time out like snow_and_rain, and have to sit in the corner for one week.

In all fairness, it is quite an entertaining forum, especially if you agree with the folks there that 1987-1995 were the band's peak years.

However, actual knowledge about the music of the Grateful Dead is quite limited there. Some folks will go to great effort reviewing shows, and undertaking comprehensive projects, without having a grasp on the bands personel changes.

Im still trying to get to the bottom of an interesting theory I saw posted over there; Skobud, who was that singing on the New Potato Caboose from 10/12/68 if Weir wss kicked out of the band?

I've always kind of thought of the Archive as a bit like the old west when compared to the other forums mentioned here; essentially lawless, but not without its charms. There's an ebb and flow to the level of inane driblle that must be sifted through; lately there have been more than the usual amount of worthless posts because a couple (at least) of trolls who blow in and out of these parts have been kicking up their heels here. From time to time I wonder why I even bother.

BUT...the depth and breadth of knowledge here is unmatched based on what I've seen. Deadhook, for example, has lots of well meaning folks, but just because you are polite doesn't mean you know what you're talking about. I only post occasionally, but I check in almost every day, on the off chance that I might stumble in to one of those threads that points me in new directions, or gets me to reconsider some previously covered ground.

Diana,

Despite the hate you read about it here, I'd encourage you to check out the Lost Sailor's Pub.

- The discussion there is well-organized, and threads don't disappear off the page like here.

- Members over there can appreciate all GD eras for what they are, generally without judgment. There is lots of talk about the 80s and 90s, yes, but that certainly doesn't preclude discussion about the 60s and 70s, which are my favorite eras.

- Signing up is no big deal, and ads are easily blocked if you use Mozilla. Frankly, I don't know why anyone would get on the Internet without a decent ad blocker.

- 99% fewer trolls and 99% less hate than this forum.

Come on over and check it out...

Nope - Skies and I are done interacting. To Diana W, if you stick around, you'll find that the topics always come back around to the music and this can be a very inviting bunch of misfits BUT it just requires a bit of a thick skin. Indeed, if there is ever a show you want/need, and it is out there, be sure one of the folks here will hook you up. For myself, I'd be incredibly bored if all we ever talked about was strictly limited to the GD. One of the great things for me about having become a Deadhead back in the distant past, but not as far back in time as many here, is that it opened my ears, heart and mind to appreciate,
question and investigate many, many other things. This forum does the same..... and I also hate emoticons. Cue WT

This kid from Raleigh NC that is starting at point guard for Kentucky is crushing UNC (although UNC mounting 2d half comeback). John Wall. Most electrifying guard I've seen in a long time. Too bad he plays for the evil bluegrass empire. Watching UNC-UK makes it hard to cheer for either side, but in the end mY NC roots and ACC allegiance (and seeding issues) rise to the top. Go [to hell] Carolina.

I do know how to use the google button. I don't know what any of the other forums are like, whether they're active, whether they each have a certain focus etc. Personal recommendations can be helpful.
